The relationship between melatonin level and antioxidant enzymes in diabetic patients with and without nephropathy

Background and objective: Diabetes is the most common cause of chronic renal disease globally. Diabetic nephropathy (DN) one serious consequences type 2 diabetes. Melatonin, a powerful antioxidant that has been shown to alleviate DN, deficiency functional relationship between melatonin insulin have linked etiology diabetes mellitus. The purpose this research assess level enzyme activity (catalase, glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, paraoxonase 1, glutathione-s-transferase) in diabetic patients with without nephropathy. Methods: This case-control study was conducted on 45 healthy control subjects, nephropathy, Serum samples participants were used evaluate activities, levels, MDA using specific assays. Results: results showed concentration not affected but decreased significantly when compared subjects. Antioxidant enzymes sera lower than subject group. dismutase exception because its elevated, unlike other enzymes. Conclusions: Melatonin affects lipid peroxidation controls.
